After more than a decade of litigation, Sutter Health has agreed to pay $228.5 million to settle claims that it abused its market dominance to drive up healthcare costs across Northern California. What’s the Case About?

Sutter Health allegedly forced insurance carriers—including Blue Shield, Anthem, Aetna, Health Net, and UnitedHealthcare—into “all-or-nothing” contracts. These arrangements prevented insurers from steering patients to more cost-effective hospitals, ultimately raising premiums for businesses and individuals across 38 Northern California counties.
